JOB SUMMARY: The Sanitation Truck Driver reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Water Plant Operator. The Sanitation Truck Driver works to assist the Six Nations Public Works Water/Sewer Department in the performance of sanitation collection and disposal services, as well as daily activities of the Water/Sewer Department as required and duties related to the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council policies and procedures.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a minimum education level of Grade 10 with one year related work experience.
  • Must possess a valid Class D-Z driver’s license.
  • Previous experience operating a vacuum pump to empty septic wastes.
  • Ability to pass police security check and provide a driver abstract driving record.
  • Must be bondable.
  • Possess initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Must be skilled in public relations and dealing with the public.
  • All immunizations must be up to date.

SIX NATIONS PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

POSITION:               Sanitation Truck Driver

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of Water Plant Operator or designate.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

To assist the Six Nations Public Works Water/Sewer Department in the performance of sanitation collection and disposal services, as well as daily activities of the Water/Sewer Department as required and duties related to the Six Nations Public Works policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Operates a diesel powered truck equipped with sanitation liquid tank and vacuum pump.

Operates a diesel powered vactor truck equipped with a PD blower, high pressure jetting and washing apparatus.

Ensure the truck is cleaned weekly, i.e., pressure washed.

Performs daily circle inspection of vehicle according to inspection booklet prior to daily usage and report all repairs to supervisor.

Performs minor repairs and routine maintenance on various equipment, i.e., greasing, oil, etc.

Keeps work log book of daily activities and also any unusual circumstances, i.e., property damage.

Exercises extreme care and caution to ensure no septic tank leaching bed is driven over, no cisterns or wells are pumped out, no property damage, etc.

Leaves door hangers at customers’ homes in a readily accessible and visible area at the completion of every call.

Provides support to the Six Nations Emergency Response Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency Response Plan and assists as instructed by the Water Plant Operator.

Performs other related duties as may be required by the Supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Work involves extensive physical activity; work outside in inclement weather conditions; local travel and extensive interaction with the public who may be hostile and/or irate; subject to deadlines, interruptions, and unscheduled hours; ability to take direction, prioritize and work independently, subject to foul and obnoxious odour.

Six Nations Public Works is a community minded organization that helps other departments of the Six Nations of the Grand River and/or community organizations with their equipment, tools and manpower when required.

With the Water Plant Operator:

Receives direction, discusses plans and priorities to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively.

With other staff members:

Courtesy, cooperation and teamwork with all staff.

With the public:

Represents and promotes Six Nations Public Works Department in a courteous, positive and cooperative manner, provides any information and assistance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
