The Transitional Housing Advocate – Honouring the Circle Transitional Housing Program provides operational and programming support to all women and their children while residing at Honouring the Circle. They assist in maintaining a safe, secure, empowering environment for all women and ensure that an opportunity to create realistic transitional plans regardless of their physical, mental, spiritual or emotional situation or background is provided.

The Transitional Housing Advocate assists in ensuring support services are provided with an anti-racism/anti-oppression view. They are responsible for the operation of the residence in accordance with policies and procedures and all applicable laws, by-laws, rules, regulations and Acts.  The Transitional Housing Advocate maintains an appropriate professional relationship while working as an effective member of the Native Women’s Centre team.



  • Conduct interviews for potential residents & review the intake procedures ensuring proper steps and documentation are followed.
  • Conduct one on one appointments with Honouring the Circle residents and develop wellness/transitional plans accordingly.
  • Provide incoming residents with orientation, house tours and establish responsibilities and expectations.
  • Upon discharge, ensure that proper procedures and forms are completed. Clean rooms, pack belongings and ensure all items are accounted for.
  • Complete facility checks & resident room checks (for clutter of items) and ensures that resident chores are done properly.
  • Provide emotional support, education on abuse issues and make appropriate referrals.
  • Utilize non-violent crisis intervention skills to handle all crisis situations that arrive and/or difficult/unruly residents.
  • Provides emergency safety oriented first aid and/or CPR and participates in the fire drill and other health & safety training.
  • Record all incoming telephone calls and visitors, residents, as well as staff coming into and leaving the house and comply with COVID protocols in place.
  • Respond appropriately to a variety of general questions regarding Honouring the Circle program/services from visitors and the general public or referral to the appropriate staff person.
  • Support with administrative duties and complete forms, daily logs and incident reports in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assist in providing basic life skills counselling to residents with special attention to budgeting, nutrition and meal planning, household safety and cleaning and infant/child care.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as required ensuring smooth operation of Honouring the Circle programs and services.


  • Diploma in Social Work or Native Community Care and 2+ years’ experience in the human services field
  • Knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and teachings
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering programs from an Indigenous culture foundation
  • Knowledge and understanding of women’s issues specifically but not limited to Indigenous family violence, violence against women, cycle of violence/power and control, intergenerational trauma and knowledge regarding homelessness
  • Must possess a valid adult/infant/child CPR and First Aid Certificate
  • Must possess Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification
  • Must possess a current Police Clearance check (with Vulnerable Sector clearance) or provide upon prior to commencement of employment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Computer skills are an asset
  • Good time management, planning and scheduling skills
