 About the Position

Norfolk General Hospital is seeking a Stationary Engineer – 3rd Class.  First and foremost, the Stationary Engineer will be a part of the maintenance team.  As part of the maintenance team this position will participate in all maintenance work within the hospital.  The Stationary Engineer also acts as the primary team member who operates and maintains equipment in the plant (boilers / chillers) rooms, i.e., boilers, chillers, HVAC, pumps, etc. and performs overall building services ensuring the safe, efficient and economical operation of all equipment and systems in accordance with the regulations of the Operating Engineers Act. as well as conducting rounds, inspections, and other similar functions.  The ideal candidates would be dedicated to patient care and committed to championing the Hospital’s Mission to deliver high-quality, integrated and innovative care, together with our partners.

Complete all work orders as assigned/required, which may include a variety of maintenance tasks including but not limited to; moving equipment, plunging toilets, repairing drywall, etc.   Ensures the safe, efficient and economical operation of all equipment and systems during his / her shift in accordance with the regulations of the Operating Engineers Act.  Routinely performs the necessary tests and chemical treatment of boiler feedwater, heating water, chilled water, condenser water and soft water, including monitoring parameters for equipment / systems; operation of building management computerized system, performs related duties to ensure the cleanliness of plant rooms, equipment & systems and general upkeep of specific equipment as assigned.  Responsible for maintaining inventory, including ordering supplies, parts & material, etc., and arranging for service contracts; ensures contractors working on site follow the required policies and procedures, etc. Adheres to all safety regulations and maintains a good preventative maintenance schedule.

Assists in developing SOP’s for work related activities pertaining to maintaining, operating, and inspecting equipment & systems, including any required for performing rounds.  Keeping the Lead updated on all issues pertaining to the plant, adheres to departmental and organizational procedures and is responsible for other duties and assignments as delegated.

Position Qualifications:

  • Ontario Certificate of Qualification as a Third-Class Stationary Engineer.
  • Grade 12 education.
  • Graduate of a trade or vocational program or completion of Building Operators Certificate and/or Hospital Maintenance Technician certificate an asset.
  • Three years building operation and maintenance experience including areas of, but not limited to, plumbing, electrical, gas fitting, steam plant, auxiliary power generators, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, as well as, preventative maintenance, and building automation systems.
  • Previous experience in a Hospital or large institution preferred.
  • Relevant knowledge of the Operating Engineers’ Act and other related codes, regulations and standards.
  • Demonstrated technical research, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to set priorities, and organize workload, complete assigned duties within established schedule and handle emergencies effectively.
  • Verbal and reading skill necessary to read and understand blueprints and technical manuals, etc., pertaining to operation and maintenance of equipment and systems
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills that are customer service focused.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, give clear work direction and assign tasks
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, preventative maintenance, and order entry systems an asset.
  • Knowledge of automated and computer processes, i.e., building management and chemical water treatment systems, including boilers, chillers, pumps, HVAC equipment & systems
  • Ability to assess mechanical malfunctions and enact solutions independently in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of relevant safety practices in relation to staff, patient, and environmental programs.
  • Physically capable of performing all duties including heavy lifting, twisting, bending, walking and standing for pro-longed periods of time and carrying various items and weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to maintain a co-operative working relationship with other members of the health care team
  • Ability to maintain an excellent attendance record

Hours of Work:  Monday - Friday Days; may include shift work, is scheduled on a weekly on-call rotation, and is required to work overtime as well as being called in after regular work hours (i.e., after hours and on weekends)
