“Director of Finance”
Finance Department - Full-Time | Permanent
We are seeking a strategic, collaborative, and experienced Director of Finance to lead the Nation's financial operations and help ensure the responsible stewardship of community resources. Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer, this leadership role oversees accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, audits, compliance, and financial administration while supporting informed decision-making across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
· Provide strategic leadership for the Finance Department, overseeing accounting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial reporting, and daily financial operations.
· Lead the annual budgeting process, monitor departmental budgets, prepare forecasts, and provide financial guidance to leadership and program managers.
· Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for Chief and Council, funding agencies, auditors, and other stakeholders.
· Ensure compliance with funding agreements, financial legislation, regulatory requirements, internal controls, and audit standards.
· Monitor cash flow, banking activities, reconciliations, and financial records while maintaining strong financial controls and risk management practices.
· Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing finance team while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
· Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes, improve reporting systems, and enhance organizational effectiveness.
Qualifications & Experience
We are looking for candidates who bring:
· Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
· Minimum five (5) years of progressive financial management experience, including budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, and administration.
· Minimum three (3) years of leadership experience supervising finance staff or managing a finance function.
· Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, payroll, taxation, and risk management.
· Experience interpreting funding agreements and preparing financial reports for government and funding organizations.
· Excellent leadership, analytical, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
· Advanced proficiency with financial software (SAGE) and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
Assets
· CPA designation (preferred).
· Experience working with First Nations communities or Indigenous organizations.
· Knowledge of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) funding agreements, Ontario First Nations Limited Partnership (OFNLP) gaming revenue reporting, and First Nation financial administration.
