Position: Cultural Advisor to the Board
Time commitment: Average five (5) to ten (10) hours per month (meetings, preparation, events)
Term: Three (3) years, appointed or elected annually at the Annual General Meeting (Term may be renewed once for a total of four years)

Principle Duties of the Cultural Advisor to the BOARD of Directors:

  • Prepare for and participate in board meetings (Supper, Quarterly and Annual Meetings)
  • Participate in the development of a strategic plan to help guide future decisions
  • Abide by all by-laws, code of conduct and all other policies including health and safety, that apply to the board
  • Help establish, review and monitor operational polices including ones related to the quality of care and human resources.
  •  Identify prospective board members
  • Attend and participate in the Annual General Meeting
  • Be an ambassador for the Association in the wider community
  • Keep informed about community issues relevant to the work of the Association
  • Shall share and teach the Board cultural teachings, beliefs, protocols of the Haudenosaunee and support the Board embracing these cultural teachings as it becomes a natural part of the Board’s culture

The following are considered key job qualifications:

  • Onkwehon:we member of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory
  • Knowledge of the community and the field in which the Association operates
  • Commitment to organization’s mission and strategic directions
  • Availability of sufficient time to devote to board duties
  • Openness to learning
  • Able to commit to orientation training sessions
  • Must serve a minimum of three (3) years
  • Ability to dialogue a consensus decision-making process
  • Must be willing to submit a police record check
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, protocols and ceremonies of the Haudenosaunee is a crucial aspect to this role

Cultural Advisor’s Job Description
Removal of the Cultural Advisor
The Cultural Advisor may be removed from the board, by majority vote, for not performing his/her duties. Being absent from three consecutive board meetings without reasonable cause will result in the automatic removal from the board unless otherwise determined by a decision of the board.
