POSITION TITLE:            Communications Assistant – Intern (Contract)

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Communications Coordinator and the Communications Director.

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

To train and assist the Communications Department in the performance of communication and information management activities related to Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council and its various departments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. External Communications
  • Support the design, production, and distribution of promotional materials for Six Nations of the Grand Rivers’ various departments.
  • Provide communications support for key events of the Six Nations of the Grand Elected Council and its various departments.
  • Act as a liaison with outside agencies.
  • Promote and protect reputation of Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council and the community.
  1. Internal Communications
  • Advise and update the Communications Coordinator on the status of current events and emerging issues.
  • Provide support to the Communications Coordinator with regards to strategic planning and communication issues.
  • Provide communications support to Departmental initiatives.
  1. Social Media
  • Support the design and development of materials to be entered onto the Six Nations of the Grand River website.
  • Participate in the creation of content to be added to the Six Nations of the Grand River website or social media accounts.
  • Assist in the development of a comprehensive communication strategy for the Communications Department.
  • Provide options for Apps, chat services to support clients in accessing services.
  1. Other Functions
  • Assist with special projects as requested.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Communications Officer and Communications Director.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Work requires a high degree of interaction with the Communications Coordinator, Communications Director, other Six Nations of the Grand River Departments, and external organizations and individuals. Subject to demands, deadlines, some stressful situations, and interruptions, need to prioritize tasks, maintain composure in demanding situations, and maintain confidentiality. Overtime, weekends, and some travel may be required.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

 

With the Communications Director:

Receives direction, instructions, supervision and interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively.

With the Communications Coordinator:

Receives direction, instructions, supervision, training and interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively, as well as the Communications Assistant Intern’s direct report/supervisor.

With Staff Members:

Works cooperatively and courteously with all staff; is a team player; provides information and assistance.

With External Agencies/Organizations and Businesses:

Promotes Six Nations of the Grand River in a positive and professional manner; interacts cooperatively and courteously.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

 

Education and Experience:

 

  • University degree or college diploma from a recognized educational institution in public relations, communications, marketing, graphic design or journalism; OR
  • Significant work experience demonstrating capacity in performing the essential responsibilities of the position.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:

  • Exceptional writing skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to effectively set priorities and multi-task.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of computer applications including, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must be trustworthy, reliable and maintain confidentiality.
  • Experience working with various types of social media platforms.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical ability and attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide external representation on behalf of an organization in a positive and professional manner.

IMPACT OF ERROR:

Error in judgement and conduct of duties may lead to lost credibility, poor public relations and misinformation being provided. Errors could result in embarrassment to the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council and administration, loss of public confidence and unnecessary conflict leading to lack of trust.

CONTROL:

  • Guiding principles set by the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council and the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Must work within the Policies and Procedures established by the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council for its Administration.
