Opening Doors, Building Community: Ryker’s Journey to Success
For many, the first step toward a lifelong career is simply having the courage to try something new. Meet Ryker Vanevery. At 25 years old, Ryker is a proud Mohawk man who understands that growth often begins with a single opportunity. While some face a clear path from the start, Ryker knew that to reach his full potential, he first needed to build a stronger foundation for his future.
The Power of a Second Chance
Every journey has a starting point, and for Ryker, that spark came from a simple newspaper advertisement. He wanted to earn his Grade 12 diploma, but he needed a supportive environment to make it happen. Unlike many who face external barriers, Ryker’s experience was defined by his readiness to learn—he just needed the right "door" to open.
"I realized that getting my Grade 12 would open many more doors for me," Ryker shares. "I’m always open to learning new things and gaining skills for the future."
Finding a Partner in GREAT
Ryker’s path to professional development led him to GREAT. From the moment he enrolled, the support was tailored to help him stack his credentials and gain real-world experience.
The progression was steady and impactful:
More Than Just a Job: Helping the Community
Today, Ryker works in Housing Maintenance, a role that allows him to be a vital resource for those around him. It is a position that perfectly blends his technical aptitude with his heart for service.
"I’m able to help the community in my place of work by being able to help elders and people in need," Ryker says.
His supervisor at Six Nations Housing, Andrew Powless, has already noted Ryker's immediate impact: "Ryker contributes a wealth of knowledge, motivation, and an eagerness to grow and learn on an ongoing basis."
Looking Ahead: The Next Five Years
Ryker isn't finished growing. He sees himself continuing to build strong professional connections and remaining a steady, helping hand within the community. GREAT didn’t just give Ryker a diploma; it gave him the confidence to communicate effectively and the skills to be a leader in his field.
As his Employment Training Counsellor (ETC) noted, "I’m really glad that he is on a good path for a successful future."
