George Miller, 21-years-old, is of Mohawk Turtle descent. He first heard about GREAT’s services from his mother and has actively participated in various available programs. In 2019, George participated in the Summer Challenge Program, gaining pre-employment skills and completing a work placement as a Kitchen Assistant. In 2020, George worked as a Farm Assistant at the Turtle Dove Corral and Aviary through our Youth Job Connection Program. In 2022, George received a Student Transition Support to help with the cost of completing his OSSD credits. In 2023, George was approved for the Employment Readiness Program for Persons With Disabilities.
This program allowed George to learn pre-employment skills and life skills and complete a placement in his field of choice. George expressed an interest in the local Six Nations Food Bank, where he successfully completed his placement as a Warehouse Worker and was welcomed for longer under our Disabilities Opportunities Initiative.
George’s passion for his industry stems from the routine and challenges it presents and his desire to give back to the community. His future goal is to work at the shopping mall. George has stated that GREAT has positively impacted his personal and professional development by enhancing his professional skills and work habits. Through his job at the food bank, George has been able to give back to his community by helping those in need.
Looking ahead, George sees himself pursuing a career off the reserve that he enjoys in five years. His advice to others unsure of their career path is to listen to their hearts. George’s Employment and Training Coach praised him for his kindness, hard work, and intelligence. He also highlighted his outstanding performance and completion of tasks during the Employment Readiness program, noting his growth and dedication.
“It makes me happy knowing I am helping those in need.”
