From Shop Class to Steel: Destiny’s Journey to the Ironworks

For Destiny Vanevery, the spark of inspiration didn't come from a textbook—it came from the heat of a welding torch. At 23 years old, Destiny is a proud member of the Turtle Clan, Mohawk Nation, and a dedicated mother to her four-year-old daughter. Like many young parents, her motivation is rooted in building a stable, prosperous future for her child, but she knew she needed the right support to turn her interest in the trades into a lifelong career.

Breaking Through the Barriers

Every success story has its hurdles, and Destiny’s was no different. While she had the ambition, she faced the practical challenges that many face when trying to balance education and parenthood.

"The challenges I faced along the way were transportation, financial, childcare, and mental health," Destiny shares. These barriers can often make a dream feel out of reach, but Destiny was determined to find a way through.

Finding a Roadmap with GREAT

The turning point came during a conversation with her auntie, Lesley. Discussing her future, Destiny learned that GREAT (Grand River Employment and Training) could provide the guidance she needed to bridge the gap between "interest" and "employment." In December 2024, she took that first step.

The support she received was a comprehensive build-up of skills and experience:

  • Career Counseling & Assessments: Narrowing down her goals through Career Cruising.
  • Job Search Assistance: Modernizing her resume and completing Ministry of Labour Health & Safety training.
  • Work Placement: Gaining hands-on experience as a Maintenance Assistant with GRETI in July 2025.
  • Technical Training: Enrolling in the Welding program at OSTTC, followed by her current enrollment in Metal Fabrication.

Mastering the Trade: A Natural Fit

Destiny’s interest in welding began with a small shop class at Hagersville Secondary. That brief introduction left her wanting more, and today, she is turning that curiosity into expertise.

"GREAT helped me by getting me a job where my communication skills grew and set out a pathway where I can accomplish my goals," she says. Her dedication hasn't gone unnoticed. Her program supervisor notes, "Destiny is an exceptional student. Her attendance has shown her good work ethic and her drive to learn all she can."

Looking Ahead: The Next Five Years

Destiny isn't just working for a job; she’s working for a legacy. Her sights are set on becoming an Ironworker, with long-term plans to retire from the high steel and open her own small welding business.

In five years, she envisions a life of stability: owning her own home, driving her dream vehicle, and having the means to travel and support her family. Beyond her professional goals, Destiny is already giving back to her community by being a positive, encouraging presence for others who might need that extra "push" to start their own careers.
