Building a Future, Drop by Drop: Brandon’s Journey to the Trades
For many of us, the drive to succeed comes from a simple place: family. Meet Brandon Barnes. At 47 years old, Brandon is a proud member of the Upper Mohawk nation and a father to two teenage girls. Like any parent, his primary goal has always been to provide a stable, meaningful life for his daughters. But as many know, having the drive to work and finding the right path are two very different things.
Breaking Through the Barriers
Before finding his stride, Brandon faced hurdles that many in our community experience. He had the work ethic but lacked the specific certifications and the professional network needed to break into the utility sector. Between the high costs of initial training and the logistics of transportation, the path forward felt blocked.
"I struggled with finding steady work that provided a living wage," Brandon shares. "I had the drive, but I didn't have the roadmap."
Finding a Partner in GREAT
Brandon had heard through social media and word-of-mouth that GREAT (Grand River Employment and Training) was the primary resource for Six Nations members looking to transition into the trades. In May 2025, he took the leap and reached out.
The support was immediate and comprehensive:
More Than Just a Job: Serving the Community
Today, Brandon works as a Remote Water Meter Installer. It’s a role that perfectly blends his love for working with his hands with his desire to give back.
"Water is a vital resource," Brandon says. "I wanted a job that felt like it was contributing to the infrastructure of our community. By ensuring our water systems are efficient, I’m helping our long-term sustainability."
His supervisor and the team at GREAT have already noticed his impact. By adapting his previous millwright experience to the water treatment sector, Brandon has proven that existing skills can always find a new, powerful purpose.
Looking Ahead: The Next Five Years
Brandon isn't stopping at installations. His sights are set on becoming a Water Treatment Plant Operator, ensuring that our community’s utility infrastructure remains top tier for generations to come.
GREAT didn’t just give Brandon a paycheck; they gave him confidence. "Knowing I have a specialized skill set allows me to provide for my family with pride," he says.
