Objective

The Purchase of Training Program is designed to help participants overcome existing or anticipated labour market barriers, by obtaining employment that meets labour market of businesses and other organizations’ needs. The Program offers a variety of training courses, from public and private training institutions.

Training courses may require a participant to purchase items over and above those covered by course tuition. These may include equipment, clothing, starting tool kits, immunizations and other costs. Funding may be available on a per participant basis, to cover mandatory costs as stipulated by the institution; supporting documentation is required.

Program Details

Eligibility

To qualify for the Purchase of Training Program or Skills Development, participants:

  • Must be a Six Nations of the Grand River Band Members.
  • Are No longer required by law to attend school.
  • Are Unemployed, underemployed, in need of demand driven skilled training, to secure sustainable employment.
  • May be an insured participant.
  • Not an insured participant, who is unemployed, underemployed and in need of demand driven skilled training to secure sustainable employment.
  • Have a clear detailed Return to Work Action Plan.
  • Must be registered with Grand River Employment and Training.

Waiting Period

There will be a one-year waiting period, before clients are eligible for second purchase of training. Client must have worked for one year in the area of training they have received.

Up to a maximum of fifty-two (52) weeks.

Program Supports

In order for a client to be reimbursed for any cost associated with a Purchase of Training/Skills Development Program, prior approval must be given from the PSO during the counselling interview. (Example, tuition fee, seat fee, books and other related costs.)

Training Allowance

  • In order for a participant to be eligible for a Training allowance, the course must be considered full-time.
  • Training allowances depend on a participant’s circumstances. However, there are maximums, as per GREAT’s training allowance policy.
  • Allowances are paid at a weekly rate, based upon full-time enrollment in a training program.
  • Training allowances are paid, based on a bi-weekly schedule, with a one (1) week holdback, made through direct deposit.
  • If spouse/common law partner has an income of $500/week or more than the trainee will receive the single rate.
  • Applicable TAPPS Policy will apply

Dependent Care

While on training, a participant may qualify for a dependent care allowance, to pay for supervised care of dependents. The amount will depend on the number of dependents requiring child care and the number of hours of supervision required. Childcare will be adjusted, based on the client’s actual attendance at training.

Living-Away-From-Home Allowance

Participants may qualify for an allowance, of up to $40 per day or $200 per week, for the first two (2) weeks of training, to establish living arrangements. For the remainder of the training, the participant may receive up to $25 per day or $125 per week. The individual applying for this allowance must be maintaining two (2) residences.

Travel Assistance

Travel assistance may be provided when an individual is required to relocate to the training site, over a long distance. A travel allowance of $.35 per km is available to travel to the training site, at the beginning of the training, to return home at the end of the training and to travel home and return over the Christmas holiday season.

Parking Costs

Where parking fees are charged at the training site, a participant may receive funding, based on the receipts submitted to GREAT’s Programs and Services Officer. Once established, this fee will be included in the training allowance.
