TSITEWAHKET LAND BASED PRACTITIONER - CONTRACT

JOB POSTING

Seeking a Land Based Practitioner for a contract position (now until March 31, 2027) with the possibility of transitioning to a Full-Time position. Working 40 hours per week. Under the direction of the Tsitewahket Coordinator, the Land Based Practitioner supports Indigenous children, youth, adults, and families through culturally grounded healing and overall wellness activities on the land. The position is rooted in the understanding that Land, Culture, Identity, Family, Community and Creation are interconnected and can support physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness.

The Land Based Practitioner contributes directly to NHTC’s mental health, addictions, and prevention mandate. Land based programming is intentionally used to support protective factors; connection, identity, coping, recovery, relapse prevention, emotional wellness, and healthy relationships for individuals, families, and community members who are affected by mental health concerns, substance abuse, trauma, and the impacts of colonization.

This is a hands-on, physically active, predominantly outdoor position. The successful candidate must be comfortable spending extended periods outdoors throughout the seasons and participating directly alongside program participants. The Practitioner helps create opportunities for participants to experience wellness through connection with the land, water, culture, community and our traditional ways of life.

Programming may include fishing, hunting, trapping, snaring, camping, canoeing, harvesting, gardening, maple tree sap harvesting, fire making, gathering and splitting firewood, shelter building, outdoor cooking, traditional food preparation, medicines, hide skinning and tanning, land stewardship and other seasonal or culturally appropriate activities.

The Practitioner is not expected to possess all cultural knowledge or teachings. The position works collaboratively with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Cultural Resource people and community members to ensure that teachings and cultural practices are shared appropriately and respectfully.
