Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Tsitewahket Coordinator assumes the responsibility for providing comprehensive culturally based programming and support in the areas of mental health & addiction issues, trauma, impacts of residential schools and the 60s Scoop for adults, youth, and families.
As part of the Tsitewahket Team, the Tsitewahket Coordinator works closely with and supervises the Tsitewahket Admin Assistant, Tsitewahket Wellness Mentors, and other cultural supports (Elders, Cultural Knowledge Keepers, and others) to support the delivery of a range of land-based prevention programs and services to individuals and families who attend Tsitewahket Program.
The primary focus of the Tsitewahket Coordinator’s role is on the development of culturally relevant land-based wellness programs and activities that will rotate as per the seasons and include traditional & cultural teachings, ceremonies, fishing, trapping, snaring, tanning hides, maple tree tapping & syrup making, playing traditional games, while learning about roles, responsibilities to self, community, nature, and Creation. Recreational activities to assist with the physical aspects of the holistic wellness program will include lacrosse, hockey, baseball, volleyball, basketball, and archery. Includes a greenhouse for gardening and growing some of our own foods and medicines.
From a First Nations holistic perspective, health includes the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects, and encompasses the individual, family, community, and nature. The position collaborates with the NHTC Residential Treatment Program as well as other service delivery agencies within Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Six Nations of the Grand River or other First Nations to provide quality services to clients and their families.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary education in counselling, psychology, Social Services with counseling and/or two years’ related work experience in the addictions or helping field.
- Experience working in and/or knowledge of addictions residential treatment programs.
- Experience working in Mental Health and Addictions field.
- Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies and/or combination of an equivalent and relevant education would be an asset.
- Experience in group facilitation, workshop design and delivery.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written and computer skills.
- Reliable and stable as evidenced by previous experience.
- Experience working within First Nation communities.
- Minimum of 2 years of being substance free.
- Actively involved in a current personal recovery plan.
- Preference given to an Individual of Native ancestry with Knowledge and understanding of Local Native (MCFN and SN) history, clan systems, protocols, etiquette, culture, traditions, and ceremonies.
- Exceptional knowledge of Indigenous historical and contemporary issues
- Experience supporting individuals, families, and communities to access cultural teachings, ceremony and develop plans for traditional healing.
- Experience in community-based mental health and addictions related community outreach, prevention, and aftercare support.
- Experience coordinating and facilitating cultural and land-based activities.
- Experience in cultural, land based and clinical modalities in prevention, healing and aftercare support services is an asset.
- Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach
- Knowledge and experience working with Indigenous children, youth and families in a healing and reconciliation capacity.
- Fluency in a First Nation language is an asset.
- Successful completion of Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
- Must have a valid driver’s license and complete a 3 Year Driver’s Record check.
- Flexibility is a must; hours may vary depending on need.
- Ability to provide input to policy and procedure development.
- Ability to provide input into program design and development.
- Ability to establish and maintain culturally appropriate relationships with colleagues and clients.
- Ability to operate a computer and relevant computer applications (e-mail, word-processing, Excel), databases, and cell phone.
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and projects.
- Able to participate in outdoor and athletic programming.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of NHTC Programs and Services.

- Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, and lifting.

- Demonstrated punctuality and attendance.
- High levels of client emotionally charged situations may be experienced.
- Demonstration of positive attitudes and friendliness.
