JOB SUMMARY: The Transfer Station Attendant Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Roads Foreman or Designate.
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
To provide support for Transfer Station operation and maintenance activities as required by the Six Nations Public Works Department in providing waste management services to the community.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum Grade 12 education
- Ontario Class “G” Drivers License
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience operating a backhoe
- Must have a trade certificate for Heavy Equipment Operator (dozer, excavator, tractor-loader-backhoe)
- Other Related Skills:
- Excellent verbal communication and public relations skills.
- Experience working in a Landfill Site or Transfer Station within a similar role is an asset.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- First Aid Training Certificate
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods
- Maintain up to date WHMIS Certification
- Ability to maintain equipment logs and work logs.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Possess initiative and ability to work independently.

POSITION DESCRIPTION – PUBLIC WORKS
POSITION TITLE: Transfer Station Attendant
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Roads Foreman or Designate.
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
To provide support for Transfer Station operation and maintenance activities as required by the Six Nations Public Works Department in providing waste management services to the community.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Technical Functions:
- Maintains the Transfer Station in a clean and orderly fashion by picking up loose debris, ensuring signage is clearly visible to the public, and ensuring that snow or ice is cleared so that the area is safe and accessible to the public and vendors.
- Cleans the Transfer Station bathroom daily, checks the septic tank and coordinates
supplies or septic pump outs as required.
- Performs a daily safety inspection of heavy equipment and machinery at the Transfer Station and reports any necessary repairs to the Roads Foreman or designate.
- Maintains the Transfer Station heavy equipment as per owner’s manuals and
manufacturers instructions. (i.e. Re-fueling, lubricating and greasing).
- Cleans and maintains the Transfer Station Garage regularly.
- Provides clear direction to the public on how to properly navigate the Transfer Station to dispose of their waste. Ensuring that there is sufficient space in the areas directed for the public to safely maneuver their vehicles and dispose of their waste in the proper bins.
- Cleanup of spills at the Transfer Station as required.
- Address any unsafe behaviours or unsafe situations immediately.
- Verbally and visually screens wastes for unacceptable wastes such as hazardous waste, biomedical waste, material with biohazard or cytotoxic symbols, pesticides and herbicides and batteries.
- Operates a backhoe to compact waste and reposition bins as necessary at the Transfer Station.
- Completes debris approval inspections as required.
- Performs related duties as may be reasonably required by the Roads Foreman or
designate.
- Communications Functions:
- Provides information to the public upon request regarding local waste management
options available to them as well as information on how to use the Transfer Station
safely.
- Invites feedback from vendors and the public and collaborates with the Immediate
Supervisor and Transfer Station staff to implement service and safety improvements.
- Constant communication with other Transfer Station staff to ensure the flow of the
public and vendors are coordinated in a safe and organized way.
- Collaborates with recycling vendor staff to maximize waste diversion, enhance public
safety and address any issues that arise.
- Effectively communicate with vendors while ensuring that messaging coming from all Transfer Station staff is consistent so as not to cause confusion.
- Employs appropriate customer service and communication skills when interacting with the public, venders and staff.
- Communicates regularly with the Roads Foreman or designate to provide status reports, report any issues or coordinate assistance when required.
- Communicates regularly with Public Works Administration in regards to debris approval inspections, special events or initiatives in regards to the Transfer Station.
- Follows procedures for reporting hazardous conditions, equipment and incidents.
- Review policy and procedure manuals annually.
- Administrative Functions:
- Completion and submission of all necessary inspection forms or logs.
- Collection of debris approvals daily during regular Public Works Office business hours.
- Maintaining log of travel pertaining to time, distance and gas usage as required.
- Follow the established policies and procedures at all times.
- Other Functions:
- Performs other related duties as required by the Roads Foreman or designate.
- Provides support to all parties involved
- Provides support to the Six Nations Emergency Response Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency Response Plan and providing assistance as instructed by the Roads Foreman or designate.
- It is the responsibility of the employee to be aware of and adhere to all policies and
procedures, including those that relate to public safety, staff safety and risk
management.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work involves moderate to strenuous physical activity, The employee is routinely required to stand, walk, use hands to operate equipment, reach, and climb.
Work involves mental stress; required to work primarily outside with frequent exposure to
adverse weather conditions and with seasonal exposure to unpleasant working conditions, such as exposure to household hazardous materials and foul smells; requires interaction with the public who may be hostile and/or irate; ability to take direction, prioritize and work in a team environment with little supervision.
Work requires operation of a backhoe in a public place where there is continuous pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
40 hours per week, as per the regularly scheduled operating days of the Transfer Station. Will also be required to work during certain organizational closures as directed by the Roads Foreman or designate.
Six Nations Public Works is a community minded organization that helps other departments of the Six Nations of the Grand River and/or community organizations with their equipment, tools and manpower when required.
