JOB SUMMARY: The Six Nations Education Advisor reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Director of Community. Works collaboratively with all Directors/Senior Managers/Supervisors of Six Nations of the Grand River (SNGR).

 

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

The Six Nations Education Advisor will play a key leadership role in a 3-year project aimed at enhancing educational opportunities, supports, and outcomes for Six Nations students. This individual will oversee the implementation of project activities, foster collaboration with stakeholders, and ensure that initiatives align with community needs and priorities. The Six Nations Education Advisor will also manage data collection, analysis, strategic framework development, and reporting processes.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education or related field; OR bachelor’s degree in education, Indigenous Studies, Public Policy, Social Work, or a related field AND minimum of 5 years of professional experience in education, project management, or community engagement, preferably within a First Nations context.
  • Proven track record in leading multi-stakeholder projects, including data collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting.
  • Must have a strong working knowledge and understanding of education system issues in a First Nation community.
  • Must be knowledgeable about the Six Nations learning environment.
  • Must have a strong understanding of Six Nations history, languages and culture.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, presentation, and high degree of interpersonal skills
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Strategic planning and policy development capabilities.
  • Ability to manage budgets, timelines, and resources efficiently.
  • High level of computer skills – Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

Other Preferred Requirements:

  • CPR and First Aid certificate.
  • Highly developed analytical, problem solving and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, judgement and work independently with a high degree of initiative and creativity in problem solving.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION TITLE:  Six Nations Education Advisor

POSITION TYPE:   Full-Time Contract
DURATION:                         3 Years
ANNUAL WAGE:    $78,400 (inclusive of CPP, EI, WSIB, Life & Health Benefits, and Pension)

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

The Six Nations Education Advisor reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Director of Community. Works collaboratively with all Directors/Senior Managers/Supervisors of Six Nations of the Grand River (SNGR).

 

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

The Six Nations Education Advisor will play a key leadership role in a 3-year project aimed at enhancing educational opportunities, supports, and outcomes for Six Nations students. This individual will oversee the implementation of project activities, foster collaboration with stakeholders, and ensure that initiatives align with community needs and priorities. The Six Nations Education Advisor will also manage data collection, analysis, strategic framework development, and reporting processes.

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Technical Functions:
  • Review existing reports and identify gaps in educational supports.
  • Plan and execute data collection activities, including surveys, focus groups, and interviews.
  • Work with expert advisors to analyze data and provide actionable insights for strategic framework development.
  • Lead the creation of a data-driven strategic support framework for Six Nation students in provincially funded schools.
  • Ensure the framework incorporates findings from data analysis and community feedback.
  • Develop cost projections and funding recommendations based on identified gaps and priorities.
  • Prepare interim and final reports summarizing findings, recommendations, and progress.
  • Develop actionable recommendations for funding, policy changes, and resource allocation to address identified needs.
  • Manages workflow (project management).

 

  1. Communication Functions:
    • Act as the primary liaison between leadership, the Ministry of Education, and other stakeholders.
    • Facilitate consultations with students, families, Elders, knowledge holders, and educators to gather input and feedback.
    • Advocate for community priorities at the First Nation Lifelong Learning Table (FNLLT) meetings.
    • Host knowledge-sharing sessions and presentations to disseminate findings and promote collaboration.
    • Communicate the strategic framework and project outcomes in accessible formats to community and stakeholders.
    • Create guides, workshops, and materials tailored for students, families, and educators.
    • Ensure all resources are culturally relevant and address key areas.

 

  1. Administrative Functions:
  • Lead the implementation of all project activities, ensuring alignment with objectives and timelines.
  • Track progress and adjust plans as necessary to meet deliverables.
  • Attend and actively contribute to at least 80% of FNLLT meetings.
  • Ensure meeting outcomes and action items are documented and communicated effectively to stakeholders.
  • Adheres to all SNGREC employment policies.

 

  1. Other Functions:
  • Stay updated on trends in First Nation education, policy changes, and community needs to adapt the project’s approach as necessary.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required by direct supervisor.
  • It is the responsibility of the employee to be aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those that relate to safety and risk management.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The work may be subject to quick deadlines, interruptions, and unscheduled work hours.
  • Flexible hours may be necessary to accommodate community schedules, including evenings and weekends for consultations or events.
  • Work requires the ability to prioritize tasks, work independently with minimal supervision, and cope with many demands and time constraints.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

With the Director of Community:

  • Receives instruction and supervision.

With the Lifelong Learning Table Participants:

  • Provides updates on the status of research, seeks input on the development of recommendations, and shares education-related opportunities.

With other SNGR staff:

  • Maintains cooperation and consideration with all staff.

With external agencies:

  • Represents and promotes Six Nations’ interests relative to education (lifelong learning), maintains awareness of legislative, policy and program changes; seeks to develop sound, professional working relationships.

With the public:

  • Represents and promotes Six Nations’ interests relative to education (lifelong learning), works in a courteous, co-operative, positive and proactive manner, provides information as requested.

IMPACT OF ERROR:

Errors in judgement and the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relation, public confusion, duplication of effort, serious impacts on clients and misinformation being given to the Lifelong Learning Table, SNGREC, government agencies and the public.

Errors could result in legal liability and/or financial loss to self and/or SNGREC.

Errors in carrying out duties could result in poor public relations, missed deadlines, confusion, delay, duplication of effort and misinformation being given to stakeholders.

 

CONTROLS:

Works with the organizational structure and administrative policy and procedures established in the Six Nations of the Grand River Employment Policy.

Works with the guiding principles set by SNGREC, supervised by the Director of Community.

Works within the administrative policies and procedures established by the SNGREC and other legislation provided by the respective government agencies.
