JOB SUMMARY: The RECE reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Gahwajiya:de’ Detenatgwa’ta’ – Family Gathering Program Supervisor.

 

Under the direction of the Gahwajiya:de’ Detenatgwa’ta’ – Family Gatherings Program Supervisor, the Early Childhood Educator is responsible for contributing active delivery of a high-quality program for Gahwajiya:de’ Detenatgwa’ta’ – Family Gatherings by promoting the function of a workable relationship with children, parents, staff, community, and students, and performing other related duties as assigned.

The RECE will ensure the implementation of “How Does Learning Happen”, Excerpts from ELECT document, and comply with Six Nations Elected Council Employment Policy, the Six Nations Council Health and Safety Guidelines, Family Gatherings Policy and Procedures and Parent Handbook.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Early Childhood Educator Diploma and registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators or equivalent from a recognized community college
  • An equivalent college diploma from a recognized community college with 2 years’ work experience with children aged 0 to 10 and families
  • Work experience with special needs children an asset
  • Thoroughly familiar with relevant legislation, regulations, and guidelines, i.e., requirements as set out by the Child Care and Early Years Act.
  • Good organizational skills and an ability to work independently and as a strong team player, good interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledgeable about the Haudenosaunee Six Nations social character and culture, language, and traditions.
  • Familiar with traditional approaches to assisting children and families.
  • Availability and flexibility for working various shifts during weekdays, nights or possibly a shift on the weekend.
  • Possesses excellent communication skills; verbal and written.
  • Will have access to a reliable insured vehicle and must have a valid class “G” Ontario driver’s licence or willing to obtain, as required.
  • Must pass a medical examination and immunizations are up to date.
  • Must pass a criminal records/vulnerable records check.
  • Preference will be given to Haudenosaunee, Six Nations band members.
  • A good understanding of the theory and practice of family support programs in the Six Nations community and surrounding areas.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION TITLE:               Registered Early Childhood Education (RECE) 

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Gahwajiya:de’ Detenatgwa’ta’ – Family Gathering Program Supervisor.

 

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

TECHNICAL:

  • Maintaining a high-quality interactive program for families, children, and our community
  • Identifying areas that will enhance the developmental areas of the child including curiosity, self-esteem, and cultural awareness
  • Planning, writing implementing and evaluating activities/curriculum that will enhance the interactive between parents and their children, group programs and individual activities, indoor and outdoor activities: active and quiet
  • Keeping a daily journal/record observations of behaviors
  • Ongoing communications with parents and children
  • Plan, develop and implement activities that coordinate with summer camps/PD days/Mid Winters/March Break activities and outings.
  • Engage in the daily cultural and language activities
  • Cleaning and maintaining furniture, toys and equipment including counter space and sink, in designate area
  • Changing and rearranging furniture, toys, and equipment for variety
  • Applying safety procedures and handling emergencies appropriately
  • Encouraging self-help skills that are age and developmentally appropriate.
  • Role model positive adult/child relationship
  • Daily sweeping/wiping off table, take garbage out mop if needed before and after programs
  • Daily outdoor play/walks weather permitted

 

ADMINISTRATION:

  • Acting as a role model for parents, students, volunteers, other staff, and visitors
  • Assisting with planning and implementing parent meetings or programs
  • Observing individual child’s development and referring concerns to the coordinator
  • Assisting the Coordinator in developing and implementing individual programs and writing progress reports
  • Assisting in promotion activities/fundraising
  • Following behavior management guidelines.
  • Operate within multi-agency networks to ensure the correct support is available
  • Attending in-service training as well as surrounding areas
  • Provide one-on-one supports/counselling to parents, caregivers, and children in form of referrals, linkages with other professionals
  • Practice/implement the How Learning Happens framework or any future childhood developmental tools that may arise while in the position.
  • Creative activities ready and set out for the next day (prior approved by the Supervisor)
  • Computer knowledge and some experiences with data collection
  • Name tag is required
  • On-going upgrading your skills through workshops, courses, training

 

COMMUNICATIONS & LIAISON

  • Working cooperatively with all staff enhancing relationships with community resources and collaboration with existing programs and services on and off Six Nations of the Grand River communities
  • Maintaining confidentiality and ensures compliance following Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) legislation regulations
  • Maintaining a team approach to resolving such issues, conflicts and problems that may arise in the process of providing support services
  • Maintaining confidentiality as per Six Nations Council Employment Policy.
  • Assisting in the promotion of the Family Gatherings and out-reach program by advertising, utilizing social media, making presentations, and preparing posters, pamphlets and newsletters, as required.
  • Facilitating a workable relationship with children, parents, and staff
  • Attending and participating in regular staff meetings as required/directed
  • Attending training/workshops as required
  • Involving supervisor and staff in decision making respecting unit problem solving, planning and development

 

OTHER RELATED DUTIES:

Any other related duties as assigned by the Child Care Supervisors which include, but is not limited to, participation in the Six Nations Emergency Response Plan, Pandemic Plan of Response, and the Trauma Events Response Team (TERT).

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Mobile, working at several EarlyON locations in Brantford.
  • Working in a climate-controlled environment while on site
  • Responsibility of safely transporting clients/families in a reliable insured work vehicle in all weather conditions
  • Patience and flexibility working with and around children and their families in the work environments.
  • Some lifting and moving furnishings, supplies and equipment daily.
  • Flexibility in working hours as required.

  • Working in a cooperative and courteous manner that represents and promotes Six Nations Council and the Social Services Department,
  • Represents and promotes Six Nations Council, Social Services and Child Care Services, and the Gahwajiya:de’ Detenatgwa’ta’ Family Gatherings Program in a courteous, cooperative, and professional manner.
  • Familiar with Six Nations Council Employment and Health and Safety policies and procedures.

IMPACT OF ERROR:

Errors in judgment and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relations, and public confusion, serious impacts on clients and staff, and legal liability to self and to Six Nations Council.
