POSITION PURPOSE

The Public Services Librarian manages, promotes and delivers library services to the Tyndale community by providing a full range of information services, including reference, instruction, and access to information and research resources.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Establish and implement short and long-range departmental goals.
  • In collaboration with the University Librarian, recruit, develop, motivate, lead, and mentor direct reports (including student workers).
  • Ensure the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of department team members (including student workers) are based on agreed-upon measurable objectives, and corrective action is taken where necessary.
  • Ensure the duties of the Public Services team are carried out in compliance with the Library’s and Tyndale’s policies and procedures.
  • Create and sustain an environment of excellence and professionalism in customer service and teamwork.

Reference and Instruction

  • Actively promote the Library and its services to students and faculty.
  • Respond to reference and research questions in person, or by phone, email or other electronic means.
  • Teach information literacy skills to students and faculty by means of Library workshops and in-class Library sessions and online tutorials.
  • Coordinate Library orientation sessions and tours.
  • Create and update online Library Research Guides.

Public Services Administration

  • Supervise and coordinate all aspects of Public Services for Tyndale Library including: desk coverage, library signage, circulation policies and procedures.
  • Manage personal requests, lost books, outstanding accounts, and other customer service matters.
  • Oversee the general appearance of the Library, recommending needed changes.
  • Compile an annual report on the Public Services department.

General Library Assistance

  • Select resources for the Library collection in accordance with the collection development policy in areas assigned by the University Librarian.
  • Work on other professional projects as assigned by the University Librarian.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

a) Education

  • Advanced academic background in theological and Biblical studies, preferred Advanced academic background in theological and Biblical studies, preferred Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution Master's degree (six to seven year program) or equivalent, (i.e. MA, MBA, MSW, CPA)

b) Experience

  • Experience providing reference/instructional services in an academic setting 2 to 3 years related experience

c) Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to develop and provide reference and instructional services in an academic setting
  • Ability to use technology effectively in public services and instruction
  • Able to articulate departmental goals aligning with the institutional vision and mission Able to motivate, inspire and mentor others
  • Able to multi-task, prioritize, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team Basic computer skills, ability to use inter/search engines, computer programs/applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills and ability to work effectively and productively within and across functional areas

  • Working knowledge of trends and services in academic libraries to support undergraduate and graduate education

e) Physical and Mental Demands

  • Moderate to high level of stress that may result from dealing with emergencies, personnel issues, negotiating and liaising with multiple deadlines and demands
  • Sitting and using office equipment for long periods of time
  • Work outside of regular business hours

Salary Range: 

$60,000 - $66,000
