JOB PURPOSE
Under the direction and supervision of the President/CEO, the Principal is the day-to-day leader and manager of the high school. The Principal is responsible for ensuring that the school runs effectively, students are safe and achieve success, and teachers have the support they need. The Principal provides leadership and vision to foster a positive, safe, and culturally relevant learning environment that supports student success. The Principal is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan, overseeing daily school operations such as student admission, placement, and discipline, and supervising curriculum delivery to ensure alignment with educational standards, Hodinǫshǫ:nih Values, and community expectations.
The Principal supervises and evaluates staff, manages the school budget and facilities, maintains accurate student records, ensures timely reporting to families and the Ontario Ministry of Education (ONSIS), and engages with the community as an instructional leader. Also, as the leader of this private high school, the Principal is responsible for developing and implementing a financially viable business model for SNPSS considering, in part, revenue streams, cost structures and value propositions (i.e. class sizes, programming mix, facilities planning, etc.).
The Principal is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance values and operating policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while fostering positive relations with staff, students, stakeholders, and the community; contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning and work environment consistent with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga’nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Instructional Leadership 20%
- Ensures the academic curriculum and extra-curricular program is implemented
- Monitors student achievement and progress through a variety of means, including classroom observations, evaluations, accommodations, reporting, meetings with the teachers, meetings with parents/guardians
- Supports teachers to improve methodologies, strategies, academic standards, cultural relevancy & knowledge of Indigenous learning objectives
- Promotes high academic standards and celebrates the achievement of students and staff by sustaining a strong school-wide focus on teaching and learning
- Assesses school strengths and develops strategies to address improvements, while promoting the professional learning of Hodinǫshǫ:nih culture, language and history of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory
- Other related duties as assigned or required.
Staff Supervision & Support 10%
- Provide professional development and mentoring opportunities, and suggestions of AQ courses to broaden teaching skills & career potential
- Support staff individually and as a team to resolve workplace issues
- Create and sustain positive partnerships with the Six Nations of the Grand River community, other Indigenous communities and SNPSS partners
- Lead organizational planning ensuring the staff complement diversity appropriately responds to student needs and course programming objectives for the institution
- Other related duties as assigned or required.
Student Support and Discipline 10%
- Establish a learning/working environment that is founded on the Hodinǫshǫ:nih Values of Respect & a Good Mind
- Establish and monitor behaviour and discipline policies and practices
- Address student issues, conflicts, concerns, and student strengths and challenges with the Vice Principal, counsellors, teachers
- Promote student well-being through policies, procedures and practices, observations, formal assessments, meetings with parents/guardians, and clinical psychologist when required
- Ensure ongoing support for students with exceptionalities and learning challenges, including up to date IEPs and the provision of assistive devices, as required
- Establish opportunities and partnerships for learning beyond the classroom and cross disciplinary experience
- Implement discipline that is clear, firm and consistently applied by all staff using positive reinforcements
- Other related duties as assigned or required.
Communication with Parents and Community 5%
- Work with and maintain partnerships with feeder schools, area high schools, the Six Nations Council, Six Nations Education, the Language and Culture Committee, and MCFN elementary schools
- Partner with community organizations to support students academically, socially, and financially
- Represent SNPSS as a progressive learning community
- Regularly communicate to all stakeholders and learning partners, the mission of the SNPSS, including student accomplishments, and opportunities for parental engagement
- Promote an active parent-teacher group and/or an active volunteer program within SNPSS
- Actively build a greater sense of community through participation in local events, sporting challenges, Elder visits, socials, Open House, etc.

Strategic Planning 10%
- Set short and long-term goals that support the overall vision and mission of SNP
- Make purposeful, organized and collaborative decisions
- Identify areas needing improvement and share a pathway or action plan for addressing these needs
- Effectively shares strategic goals with staff
- Develop and implement a comprehensive metrics framework with key performance indicators (KPIs) for SNPSS; create action plans for continuous improvements based on KPIs and on student and parent feedback
- Develop and implement a business model for SNPSS that generates revenue in accordance with revenue targets set jointly with SNP leadership
- Lead and facilitate engagement with the SNPSS Steering Committee focusing on continuous improvement strategies and ongoing financial viability
- Act as the primary liaison with key organizational partners such as other Secondary Schools, Private Funders and Government Funders (i.e. Indigenous Services Canada)
- Coordinate and oversee the development and submission of funding applications, government reports and all other required administrative reports, proposals or submissions
- Incorporate Hodinǫshǫ:nih Values while developing, monitoring and reaching strategic goals
- Other related duties as assigned or required.
General Administration 45%
- Manage staff, including recruitment, job descriptions, work plans, task management, performance reviews etc.;
- Creating class schedules and timetables, often with staff consultations
- Managing the school budget and ensuring that resources are on-hand and utilized appropriately, working in collaboratively with the President/CEO and Finance
- Ensuring the safety of staff and students, knowing and practicing safety rules and regulations, participating in safety procedures, ensures participation on the SNP Joint Health & Safety and with the operations committees and works cooperatively with Operations
- Other related duties as assigned or required.
EDUCATIONAL KNOWLEDGE
Completion of a master’s degree in a specialized or occupational field or completion of an undergraduate degree plus professional certification M.Ed. in Educational Administration, Policy Studies, or any related field in education
EXPERIENTIAL KNOWLEDGE / CULTURE AND LANGUAGE EXPERTISE
Over 5 years and including 7 years' experience
working in a similar role, with proven leadership experience, managing a school-based budget, a strong foundation in instructional leadership, student assessment and evaluation, and previous experience working with Indigenous communities in the education field.
