As an immersion strategy, whenever possible there will be two teachers in a class: A Lead Teacher or Teacher Apprentice who is responsible for leading and creating/holding the space and a second Teacher, Teacher Apprentice, or Teacher Assistant who supports the work of the Lead while also providing valuable, additional language input. A second Teacher/Apprentice/Assistant needs to be engaged and focused on the lesson. They bring children back into the space if they are falling away or assist children needing extra help to follow along, understand the tasks at hand or to complete their work.
Second Teachers/Apprentices/Assistants converse in the language with the Lead as much as possible, whenever appropriate. Conversation should however be focused on the lesson content or meaningful mealtime conversation that is relevant and appropriate for the children. Occasional Support Staff step into the place of a second support in the classroom. Those who do not have the language proficiency skills to converse in the language will be mindful of their use of English. They will provide quiet support. When necessary to communicate with the children or the teacher in the classroom, this will be done to the side and/or in a quiet manner.
Occasional Support Staff shall be paid an hourly or daily rate of pay as established here.
