Manager, Clinical Development
About the Position:
Reporting to the Director of Quality, Clinical Practice, and Risk, the Manager acts as the operational lead for professional practice standards and clinical competency across both NGH and WHGH. In this multi-site capacity, the Manager works in close collaboration with Clinical Directors and Program Managers to identify practice gaps and deploy educational solutions, ensuring all initiatives are directly aligned with the organization’s Quality Framework, Risk Management goals, and Strategic Plan.
Key Responsibilities:
As a member of Clinical Portfolio, you will:
- Strategic Leadership: Manage professional practice and clinical education priorities within the organization, fostering a culture of continuous professional development for all health professions.
- Infrastructure Oversight: Establish a clinical development infrastructure that builds a seamless continuum from novice to expert using a blend of traditional, digital, and simulation-based learning.
- Simulation & Innovation: Design, implement, and evaluate high-fidelity and low-fidelity simulation programs (e.g., Mock Codes, Crisis Resource Management) to enhance clinical decision-making and patient safety.
- Digital Learning: Act as the organizational lead for the Learning Management System (LMS), ensuring accurate user data, course assignment logic, and system integrity while utilizing data to drive educational strategy.
- Professional Practice & Ethics: Facilitate the Clinical Practice Leader Forum and Professional Practice Committees; provide leadership in the Order Set development process.
- People Management: Recruit and retain educators, clinical scholars, and externs; conduct regular performance reviews and promote the ongoing professional development of the education team.
- Standards & Compliance: Promote evidence-based practice and maintain standards as indicated by the CNO, RNAO Best Practice Guidelines, and Accreditation Canada (including ROP compliance).
- Financial Accountability: Prepare financial budgets, capital requests, and MOH activity reports as required.
- Needs Assessment: Develop comprehensive assessments to inform staff development, including clinical orientation, annual education plans, and specialized events (e.g., Clinical Skills Fair, Patient Safety Week).
- Manage professional practice and clinical education priorities within the organization
- Establish a clinical development educational infrastructure that focuses on staff accountability that builds a seamless continuum from novice to expert using a blend of traditional, digital, and simulation-based learning
- Recruit and retain appropriate educators, clinical scholars and externs
- Conduct regular performance reviews of direct reports
- Promote ongoing professional development of the education team with skills and experience to effectively meet clinical requirements
- Provide leadership and clinical expertise to support excellence in patient centred care
- Promote a culture of continuous professional development and leading education initiatives for all health professions
- Facilitate the Clinical Practice Leader Forum and Professional Practice Committees
- Provide leadership and clinical practice in the Order set development process
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives in alignment with the organization strategic directions
- Promote evidence-based practice, maintaining professional practice standards as indicated by the College of Nurses of Ontario, RNAO Best Practice Guidelines, and Accreditation Canada
- Facilitate continuous learning and professional development through educating, coaching and mentoring of staff
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
- Develop needs assessment to inform ongoing staff development including:
- Organization and provision of clinical orientation and education throughout hospital
- Coordinate educational activities (ie: Clinical Skills Fair and Patient Safety Week)
- Develop goals and objectives to support evidence informed practice
- Evaluation of educational effectiveness and compliance with best practices (ie: Accreditation ROPs)
- Develop an annual Education plan
- Maintain current knowledge and competency and role-model continuous life-long learning
Position Qualifications:
- Registration: Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) required
- Education: Baccalaureate degree in Nursing required; Masters level degree (Education or Nursing) completed or in progress preferred
- Adult Learning: Adult Education Certificate or formal education in adult learning concepts and curriculum design, specific experience in instructional design for digital platforms preferred.
- Ethics & Governance: Deep understanding of the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), CNO Standards of Professional Practice, and the Code of Ethics.
- Leadership Skills: Proven skill in change leadership, project management, and strategic innovation.
- Clinical Expertise: Minimum 5 years recent clinical experience is mandatory; RNAO BPSO Champion preferred
- Simulation & Tech: Demonstrated experience in simulation-based education, including scenario development and debriefing (Certification in Clinical Simulation is an asset).
- LMS Proficiency: Advanced skill in managing a Learning Management System (e.g., El Sevier, Surge, Brightspace, Meditech ELM) and utilizing data to drive educational strategy.
- Core Skills: Excellent written, verbal, and public speaking skills; proficient in Meditech and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Requirements: Current BCLS and Canadian Nursing Certification; excellent attendance record and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-site environment.
