The Hamilton-Wentworth Chapter of Native Women’s Inc. is currently accepting applications for the position of Maintenance Worker Assistant (Canada Summer Jobs-students between the ages of 15 years to 30 years).

Position Summary

The Maintenance Worker Assistant, under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, will provide direct support to ensure the external and internal premises are clean and safe for the use for the residents, staff and visitors.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the lawn is mowed and watered.
  • Clear debris/garbage from the entire exterior property on a daily basis and dispose of garbage/recycling properly.
  • Keep floor areas clean.
  • Sweep and mop all exit stairwells on a regular basis and ensure the stairwells are always free of any debris or obstructions.
  • Stack house/office supplies/food deliveries.
  • Inspect the building for any necessary repair requirements or safety hazards and complete necessary follow-up.
  • Log any repair or safety needs and advise manager accordingly.
  • Check cleaning supply room and advise manager when an order to restock supplies is needed.
  • Replace batteries in smoke alarms and emergency lights and checks fire extinguishers and complete the necessary follow-up.
  • Clean laundry room, kitchen including appliances, bathroom, stairs, elevator, basement, walls, and cupboards, shed throughout the day (i.e., sweeping, mopping, etc.).

Qualifications:

  • Student between the ages of 15 years and 30 years that is enrolled in full-time schooling.
  • This experience is a paid student mentorship program through Canada Summer Jobs. No experience is necessary but preference will be provided to those candidates that have some experience, whether volunteering, through school placement and/or work experience within the social services sector.
  • Knowledge of a range of issues impacting youth, women and children including homelessness, violence against women and children, human trafficking, poverty, mental health and substance use.
  • Demonstrates cultural competency including awareness, knowledge and understanding of the impacts of colonialism and systemic issues.
  • Experience working in a shelter/communal environment is an asset.
  • Intermediate computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office Programming.
  • First Aid / CPR /AED Certification, would be an asset.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification (NVCPI), would be an asset.
  • ASIST Certification, would be an asset.
  • Ladder Safety Certification
  • Must have or obtain, within 30 days of hiring date, a Vulnerable Sector CPIC.
