Six Nations Public Library is an NPO and public library registered with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport. We are the largest and oldest First Nation Public Library in the world. Furthermore, we have almost 60 years of continuous service to our Community.

 

The Mission of the Six Nations Public Library is to enrich lives and build community while ensuring multi- format access to resources for life-long learning, research, culture, and historical archives.

 

The Board of Directors consists of 6 Directors; five community representatives and one Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council appointee. The organization is managed by a Chief Executive Officer (Director of Library Services) and has a total of 3 full time and 2 part time staff. We have a comprehensive policy manual, follow the Employment Standards Act, and participate in all taxation and benefit programs including CPP, EI, and WSIB. Full time staff can enroll in pension plans.

Executive Summary:

 

The Library Assistant is a high school position who will work up to 9 weeks with the Library in a library assistant position. No experience is required, but data entry concepts should be understood in order to quickly and competently move through training on systems. The Library is open days and evenings, and only weekdays in the summer. The candidate will have regular hours weekdays, with some evening and weekend hours scheduled. A schedule will be posted for the entire summer at the time of hire.

 

Objective:

 

The primary objective of this position is to enhance the library’s offerings to the community, in the area of programs and youth services. The primary objective for the student is to build upon their pre-existing skills to make them more qualified to carry on in their chosen career path.

 

Timeframes:

 

This position will commence on July 2 and run August 31. Hours will be Monday through Friday from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm, following the Library summer schedule.

 

Job Description:

 

The Summer Library Assistant will be scheduled for 35 hours per week. Most shifts will be 9:30am – 5:30pm, Monday to Friday, with some off hours scheduled around programs and events. The incumbent will facilitate in the areas of:

 

-Circulation: check ins / outs; shelving; shelf reading

-Patron Services: fulfilling patrons requests for printing, faxing, scanning; and other services; simple searches for library material; assistance with technology, including smart phones and tablets

-Programming: develop and deliver programming with the Programming Library Clerk

-Archives: scanning and data input

 

 

Employer Experience:

 

The Employer has worked as a public services librarian for more than 20 years, at 4 different libraries (including First Nations, Public, Academic and Private Law). The Director has experience in all facets and areas of public librarianship. In addition to an extensive customer service background, the Director’s Hon BA in Sociocultural Anthropology allows her insights following observation, and thus allowing her to further curtail the Library Assistant workplan to the Individual.

 

Outcomes:

 

The staff will have a detailed work plan which will be tailored to their abilities, skills and interests. Assuming the candidate is a high school position, this individual will learn various databases and skills relevant to business, organization, and specifically to library services. There successful candidate will learn the core knowledge applicable to all library systems. Developing skills from the 6NPL will translate to the library in their future academic institution, and thereby, have the opportunity to put the knowledge learned at the 6NPL to use elsewhere.
