GREAT STUDENT (SECONDARY)

POSITION TITLE:  LABOURER ASSISTANT - Public Works – Summer Student

2 POSITIONS AVAILABLE 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of Crystal Campbell, Community Energy Champion.

 

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

To assist the Public Works Department in the performance of duties related to the Roads,

Transfer Station, School Maintenance, Drainage, Water/Sewer/Septic, Energy, Administration, Technical Services, and Transportation Sub-Departments within the policies and procedures established by the Six Nations of the Grand River for the Public Works Department.

 

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Technical Functions 

  • Operate lawn mowers, weed eaters, small equipment.
  • Assist with general building maintenance.
  • General daily maintenance and custodial services per department.
  • General office duties such as scanning, photo copying, filing and answering phone calls.

 

2.      Administrative Functions 

  • Maintain logbook of daily duties completed.
  • Complete training (i.e. First Aid/ CPR, Working at Heights, Traffic Control, etc.)

 

3.      Communications Functions 

  • Communicate professionally with coworkers, contractors, tenants, community members.

 

4.      Other Functions

  • Related duties as may be required

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Requires extensive physical activity; outside summer work. Requires travel and extensive interaction with the public; subject to interruptions and deadlines; subject to exposure to foul and obnoxious odors. Must have the ability to work independently with little supervision.

 

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

With the Community Energy Champion:

Receives direction, guidance and discusses plans, prioritizes or interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively, receives instruction and supervision

 

With Other Staff:

Courtesy, cooperation and teamwork with all staff to provide efficient and ongoing maintenance functions.

 

With Public:

Represents and promotes Six Nations Public Works Department in a courteous, positive and cooperative manner, provides information and assistance.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have a minimum of Grade 10 education.
  • Possess initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Exhibit good organizational skills and ability to take direction.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.

Other Related Skills:

  • Class G Driver’s license would be an asset.
  • Experience/competency operating power tools, small/heavy equipment and custodial equipment safely.
  • Knowledge of office equipment including fax machine, photocopier and scanner.
  • Intermediate knowledge with MS Office.

 

IMPACT OF ERROR:

Errors in judgement and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relations, confusion, duplication of effort and misinformation resulting in negative impacts to the leadership team and the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council. Errors in judgement could lead to embarrassment to the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council, community and administration, loss of public confidence and unnecessary conflict leading to lack of trust and legal liability.

 

CONTROL:

Guiding principles set by the Six Nations Public Works and the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council. Must work within the Policies and Procedures established by the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council.
