Instrumentation Mechanic

The Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation (OFNTSC) is a nonprofit organization that provides technical advisory services, training, and capacity development to First Nations communities in Ontario.  By offering a wide range of specialized services and expertise, OFNTSC helps to enhance the quality of life, promote technical self-sufficiency, and foster economic growth within these communities.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Instrumentation Mechanic to join our team at OFNTSC.  Under the guidance of the HUB Manager, the Instrumentation Mechanic will play a crucial role in repairing and installing instrumentation equipment, locating source problems by conducting inspections, and keeping detailed and accurate maintenance reports, documentation, and work orders. This position requires someone who is highly flexible with solid interpersonal skills while working effectively in diverse working environments. We are seeking an individual capable of traveling, as well as having the ability to work independently without supervision and to meet tight deadlines.

These tasks must be executed in alignment with the culture and values of OFNTSC while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret diagrams, schematic drawings, layout plans, and engineering specifications to determine work procedures.
  • Install, repair, calibrate, and maintain instrumentation and control equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on instrumentation systems, including PLC, SCADA, monitoring, and communication systems.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctions using precision measuring and testing instruments.
  • Conduct routine compliance calibrations and testing of instrumentation systems.
  • Monitor and test water systems using chemicals (e.g., chlorine) in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Adjust and repair waterworks equipment under the direction of a qualified Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Operator.
  • Support the operation of water treatment and distribution systems.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives for instrumentation systems and equipment.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate maintenance reports, documentation, and work orders.
  • Prepare maintenance reports and audits by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends.
  • Communicate regularly with plant operators regarding preventive maintenance activities and system status.
  • Coordinate third-party service providers as required.
  • Support project management activities for minor and major capital projects, including inspections and reporting.
  • Assist with inventory management by monitoring stock levels, anticipating supply needs, and supporting procurement processes.
  • Maintain continuity among technicians and operators by documenting actions, irregularities, and ongoing requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Provide general labor support for water and wastewater operations as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Instrumentation Technician & Technology diploma or certification required.
  • Instrumentation and Control Technician (447A) Red Seal is an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years’ relevant work experience in maintenance, calibration, installation, and troubleshooting, maintenance within a water treatment plant is an asset.
  • Experience using Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Supervisory Data Acquisition & Control (SCADA), and water quality monitoring instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, and control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Professional, tactful, and adaptable, with solid interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of equipment safety standards.
  • Physical ability to bend, climb ladders, crawl into confided spaces, lift and carry heavy equipment, and lift up to 50 pounds while working in varied environments.

Conditions:

  • Reliable and insured vehicle and valid Class G Ontario driver’s license.
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and be capable of issuing clearly understandable verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout Ontario on a weekly basis.

Salary Range:

  • $90,000 - $100,000 Annually,
