POSITION: Fire Prevention Public Education Assistant (Summer Student)

CLOSING DATE: May 2nd, 2025

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Fire Chief and/or designated department Chief(s).

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

To assist the Fire Department, Fire Chief and designated Chief(s) in the performance of providing public education, fire prevention services and administrative duties as related to the Six Nations Fire & Emergency Services Department.

To assist the Fire Department and Public Education Coordinator by providing and cataloguing fire prevention materials and participating in community fire prevention events pertaining to fire fightinglprevention and protection services of the Fire Department within the policies and procedures established by the Six Nations Council for the Fire Department.

To assist with daily administrative duties and responsibilities.

RESPONSIBLITIES:

Research — collect data of all fire prevention materials in stock.

Catalogue and list materials on computer and compile information and resources available for future community events.

Assist Coordinator with fire prevention schedule of events and participants.

Attend, participate and assist in coordinating community events to assist with the distribution of public education and fire prevention materials.

Work with minimum supervision, reporting to Fire Chief/designated Chief(s) daily.

Arrange schedules, book appointments/trainings, utilizing methods of collection and social media.

Represent him/herself and Six Nations Fire& Emergency Services in a professional manner.

Administrative duties, assisting with answering main telephone line when required, meeting preparation, attending meeting for fire related committees, and completing correspondence from meetings.

Assist with daily mail pick up, incoming and outgoing correspondence.

Perform other office and/or computer related duties that the candidate may be proficient in or may be required by the Fire Chief/designated Chief(s).

Create and distribute public education and fire prevention materials utilizing Fire Department social media platforms.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work within an emergency services and administration environment; requires extensive interaction with the public; subject to deadlines and unscheduled hours; ability to take direction; prioritize work schedule; ability to work independently.

With the Fire Chief/designated Chief(s):

Receives direction, guidance and discuss plans, priorities or interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively, receives instruction, supervision.

With other staff members and volunteers:

Courtesy, cooperation, and teamwork with all fire personnel.

With the public:

Represents and promotes the Six Nations Fire & Emergency Services Department in a courteous, positive, and cooperative manner, provides information and assistance.

With External Agencies:

Represents and promotes Six Nations interests related to the Fire department, maintains awareness of legislation, policy, and program changes; seeks to develop sound professional working relations.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Basic Requirements:

Exceptional computer skills, database, and word processing. Eg.Microsoft Office.

Valid driver's license.

Must be able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

Possess initiative and ability to work independently.

Exhibit good organization skills and ability to take direction.

Other Preferred Requirements:

Valid CPR and First Aid training.

Must have an awareness in public relations and dealing with public.

IMPACT OF ERROR:

Errors in carrying out duties could result in financial loss and loss of credibility or legal/financial liability to Six Nations Council; errors in conduct would result in poor public relations; errors in duties could result in harm or fatal injury to employees, volunteers, and the public.

CONTROLS:

Guiding principles set by the Fire Chief and by the Six Nations Council and the Six Nations Fire Department.

Works within the administrative policies and procedures established by the Six Nations Council for the Fire Department and other legislation provided by the respective government agencies.
