ROLE SUMMARY 

At the heart of the organization, Nimkee Nupigawagan Healing Centre (NNHC) is committed to honor Indigenous traditions, knowledge, and culture as the basis of the healing journey. We are seeking a respected indigenous Elder to help us provide invaluable guidance and support to our team and youth. The Elder will understand the concept of holism, the importance of relationship-building, connections to the land, intergenerational trauma, colonization, and decolonization which are common themes throughout our program. 

 

It is our communal belief in indigenous self-determination, and our deep respect for the strengths of indigenous people and hence, we maintain a commitment to ensuring that we continue to develop, share and fully honour this foundational belief.  The Elder will help us maintain these beliefs and ongoing commitment. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Create supportive guidance and advise with program participants, incorporating traditional Indigenous practices (e.g., traditional medicines, the medicine wheel, Seven Grandfather Teachings).  
  • Offer expert advice on Indigenous cultural protocols, ceremonies, and traditions. 
       * Share stories, songs, and teachings to promote cultural understanding and appreciation. 
       * Assist in developing culturally appropriate programs and initiatives. 
  • Lead and participate in traditional ceremonies, healing, and prayer. 
  • Offer counselling and mentorship to program participants, staff, and Board members. 
  • Work in unison with the Cultural Coordinator and others at the Centre to provide adequate traditional support and /or design cultural models of care. 
  • Attend meetings and provide guidance to the Board, when required. 
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate groups, circles and workshops for participants. 
  • Participate in cultural plans of care and other planning efforts. 
  • Other duties as required and mutually agreed upon. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

 

  • Must be an Indigenous person with lived experience and supportive of indigenous worldviews. 
  • Possess counselling skills and some experience in dealing with trauma & mental health issues. 
  • Ongoing involvement with Indigenous culture and traditions.  
  • Comprehensive knowledge, understanding and awareness of Indigenous traditions, ceremony, teachings, and practices. 
  • Ability to work in a team setting or and ensure confidentiality. 
  • Additional training can be provided by Nimkee NupiGawagan Healing Centre. 
  • Respected and recognized member of an indigenous community as an elder, knowledge keeper, or spiritual advisor. 
  • A diploma or degree in social work or community development would be an asset. 
  • Must have a current Vulnerable Persons Sector Check. 
  • Local travel may require the use of a personal vehicle. 
  • Current valid Ontario driver's license and willingness to submit a driver's abstract. 

Experience 

  • Familiarity with traditional Indigenous healing practices, customs, values, and traditions. 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of case management and client/family-oriented care models for health/mental health needs. 
  • Knowledge of various therapeutic models which blend with indigenous forms of delivery. 
  • Knowledge of Indigenous resources 
  • Maintain strong working relationships with allied professionals, community leaders, knowledge keepers, and Elders. 
  • Strong mediation, negotiation, and conflict support skills for crisis and emergency situations. 
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills in an indigenous language. 
  • Provide guidance in a supportive manner. 
  • Ability to teach, coach, and facilitate clients and families. 

 

Nimkee Nupigawagan Healing Centre focuses on Indigenous traditional healing modalities. Employees are expected to be involved in traditional ceremonial and cultural activities to support our participants healing.  

 

Employees must be able to participate in ceremonies including smudging, sweat lodge, heal circles, and other ceremonies as a condition of employment.
