The Hamilton-Wentworth Chapter of Native Women’s Inc. is currently accepting applications for the position of Child and Youth Worker (Canada Summer Jobs-students between the ages of 15 years to 30 years).

Position Summary

The Child and Youth Worker, under the direction of the Program Manager will provide physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social programming, case management and direct supports to foster improved outcomes for children, youth and families accessing our services. The role includes:

  • Conducting caregiver and child/youth intakes, planning/development and facilitation of group programming.
  • Engagement with clients, community members and other community professionals is conducted in a respectful, non-judgmental and supportive way that helps incorporate culture as a way of being and knowing to improve their health and wellbeing, develop life skills, increase their sense of self, belongings and build resilience.

Qualifications Required

  • Post-secondary enrollment within one of the following programs: social work, social service work, child and youth studies, justice studies, Early Childhood Education or related field that includes:
  • Knowledge of and experience working with a range of issues impacting youth, women and children including homelessness, violence against women and children, human trafficking, poverty, mental health and substance use.
  • Demonstrates cultural competency including awareness, knowledge and understanding of the impacts of colonialism and systemic issues.
  • Experience working in a shelter/communal environment and completing intakes, safety plans, case notes, incident reports, plans of care, etc. is an asset.
  • Case management experience and knowledge of various community resources to support people with diverse needs achieve their goals.
  • Experience with program development, implementation and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation techniques, harm reduction, and crisis management.
  • Intermediate computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office Programming.
  • Experience performing light cleaning, laundry, and cooking duties.
  • First Aid / CPR /AED Certification
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification (NVCPI)
  • ASIST Certification
  • Food Handlers Certification
  • Must have or obtain, within 30 days of hiring date, a Vulnerable Sector CPIC.

SALARY: $17.60 an hour

JOB TYPE: 35 hours per week (8 - 12 weeks)
