Wage: $21.86
Start Date: Start – ASAP following hire
Supervision:
The successful candidate will be employed by the Fort Erie Native Cultural Centre Incorporated, responsible to the policies and directions determined by the Board of Directors and under the daily supervision of the Executive Director or his/her delegate.
Objective of Akwe:go:
To ensure effective delivery of the Program such that the needs of children referred to the program are met in a timely and culturally sensitive manner.
Responsibilities:
- To increase cultural understanding of children and their families
- To promote inter-generational activities
- To ensure the development and implementation of a full range of program services as identified in the Friendship Centre’s Annual Service plan
- To promote awareness and ensure access to the Akwe:go Program
- To promote the development of protocols and referral agreements as appropriate to meet the developmental needs of Indigenous children in the community
- To conduct needs assessments for children and to develop a plan of action to meet the needs of children referred to Akwe:go
- To refer children to appropriate services as required to meet the needs of the children and to document the results of these referrals
- To initiate and participate in case conferences as necessary to ensure needs of children are met
- To co-ordinate individual and group activities (physical, social) as required to meet needs of program clients
- To ensure supervision of all Akwe:go program activities
- To ensure the maintenance of a secure and confidential filing system as required under the Case Audit Policy of OFIFC
- To provide accurate records and reports of Akwe:go activities and needs.
- To participate in training and evaluation processes to ensure continued growth and development of Akwe:go
- To ensure a balance of approaches is available to meet the needs of all children attending and participating in the program
- To liaise with community children’s development through increasing life skills, safety and awareness and anti-violence training
Qualifications:
- Understanding and being familiar with Traditional Cultural knowledge
- Ability to assist community members through the use of cultural knowledge perspective vs. western knowledge
- Ability to connect naturally with Indigenous children and families
- Ability to demonstrate cultural and social needs of Indigenous children and families
- Knowledge of Fort Erie Native Cultural Centre and surrounding Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organizations in the area to support children and their families
- An understanding and commitment to the needs, barriers, and goals of Indigenous people
- Ability to assess the needs of Indigenous people in an urban setting
- Ability to engage urban Indigenous people
- Care and compassion in working with Indigenous children and their families
- Ability to plan, organize and meet deadlines
- Ability to develop action plans with children and their families
- Exceptional computer skills are required
- Excellent presentation skills and the ability to facilitate discussions/workshops
- Exceptional communication skills
- Exceptional time management skills
- Ability to work well independently and as a team member
- Ability to follow direction
- 2-year College Diploma, Degree in Social Work, Sociology or Psychology preferred along with experience in working with children
- MUST have a valid Ontario class G license and a clean driver’s abstract.
- Must have access to a dependable vehicle
- Must have or be able to obtain a satisfactory vulnerable sector CPIC
